“Shanshui (Landscape) is the theme topic of my creation, which contains the core value of both eastern harmony of Yin & Yang and western construction method of virtuality and reality. Many people take my sculptures as physical shapes that be retained, but the shedding during my creation is in the shadow. Those removed parts by caving are like the “Shui (Water)” in “Shan Shui (Landscape)”, flowing continuously, overcoming strength with softness, cutting through the rocks. It represents my thought path and spiritual intention.” ——Lai Chi Man
「Clear the mind to savor the image」comes from Zong Bing, a Chinese painter of the Southern Dynasty. It refers to admiring the aesthetics of the natural image with an empty and clear state of mind. Fond of the interest of Taoism philosophy, Lai Chi Man intervenes in the creation of sculptures by means of pictograms and metaphors in the Chinese word-formation.
By taking advantage of the power of nature to shape the materials, the core theme of “Shan Shui (Landscape)” and the traditional cultural philosophy of "the unity of nature and man" emerges. Exhibited series of works expresses the beauty of the landscape in an abstract and impressionistic style.
